THE SCENE OF LIVESREFLECTED IN THE EYES OF ONE’S HANDS CLASPED IN PRAYER

by Kensuke Tsukuda :  Professor of  Housei University

Hot affection for Lives will automatically let him take his painting brushes.

Genshun Ueno is a Japanese Painter and also has a qualification of a priest of Nichiren Buddhism sect.He is so-called a painter priest. Born In 1946,Tochigi Prefecture, graduated from department of Art of Tokyo Education University in 1970 and took a job as a pubric school fine art teacher.Resigned teating job in 1977 and went to India and met with “Buddha” and “Yoga”. Since then he visited Palestine’s Refuges Camps at the occasion of JALLA Artist Conference and he met with B.S.Rajneesh,a holy teacher at Pune in India In 1979. With such backgrounds as his career,Genshun Ueno started his painter activites. As evidenced from his autobiography he started as an painter and took the Buddhist priest afterwarde.

Why he gave up vocation as ateacher and went to India?

When weprobe into the reasons. may be we couled his spiritual inevitabilities aiming at religious orientation.

“Altough Buddha Always Exists” is a work to touch upon susuch inevitabilities. Surrounded by leaves with natural green and the graceful figure of Buddha sitting on white flowers. There are no lotus flowers with light-crimson colourand undoubtedly genuine leaves will be penetrated into the figure of the Buddha and almost seems to separate the figure. But the golden face and hands and foot as wel as clothes of cinnabar-red are deemed to become the forms of leaves of Buddha. The worldis the stream of lives and the Universe will dwell in respective lives.

Although Buddha is Always Exists F100 11th JAG Exibition

In the context of “Altough Buddha Always Exists”the conjunction of “Altough” the artist’s thought seems to be sounded as if a question mark(?) to be answerd by himself .I presume that genuine questions of his own lives are being made in “Altough” question.

The artist sutudied oil paintings first but he guradually transfered to Japanese paintings by expressing lives of plants and nature as well as mandaras.

“Altough Buddha Always Exists” represents modern sense of beauty. Presentation tends to berather decorative patterns and form comoosition of bright tone with consistent style.,“Group of leaves” is one of the characteristics of this work snd typically exemplified in the works of “Leaves of Words” and “Fluctuation” Intensified more its density in the work of “A Tune of Bharata.”

The group of leaves are lives of flourishment who are moving as if they were living creatures and they absorb tropical airs. An Indian dancer who dances with this scene background, presents herself rhythmical and graceful movement and lives themselves are assimilated into dance of “Bharata Tune Itself.”

The painter wrote a very interesting essay entitld “Eyes of One’s Hands Clasped in Prayer.” According to hisessay, he sometimes pressed with very solem spirit when he confronted with masterpieces of Gogh and those of Renaissance and reminded himself of anarticle of “Eye-bank” in the newspaper. A patient, her eye will be taken out in her dream. The eye will tear by seeing her cast-off shell of eye-ball and bid farwell by thanking of her life so far. For this, the painter dreams this “eye” as equals to the spirit of Artist and “The Work” is a transplanted eye ofthe painter himself.

In the “Eyes of One’s Hands Clasped In Prayer.” the encounter scene of “Buddha” and Yoga in India will be reflected.
